Gales
Point Village:

Gales
Point Village is only about ¾ ± mile from
the Western portion of the property, this quaint Creole
village is located on the 2.5 mile Gales Point Peninsula
which juts out into the Southern Lagoon. This village was
originally settled in the 1800's by Logwood cutters and
is now peopled by around 400 friendly Creole fishermen and
farmers who are starting to turn to Eco-tourism as a new
way of life. This village is also very well known for its'
skillful builders of dugout canoes (locally called "Dories").

One
of the many activities available in the area is Manatee
watching in the Southern Lagoon, which is the regions largest
stronghold for the protected endangered Caribbean Manatee,
locally called "Sea Cows" this area is also the
largest breeding ground for these docile, harmless aquatic
giants which can grow up to 13 ft. in length and weight
up to 4,000 pounds.
These
gentle creatures can be seen basking at the surface of the
lagoon, or coming up for to breath while grazing on the
abundant sea grass beds along the lagoon bottom.

There
is excellent fishing in the lagoons, on the flats, in the
sea and in the Manatee Bar River and the World renown Belize
Barrier Reef is only 17 miles away for excellent fishing
and diving! There are also many different islands within
close proximity for kayaking, sailing, etc.
There
are numerous waterways and lagoons to explore in search
of a large diversity of wildlife and an incredible variety
of birds, with the possibility of visiting many small cayes
in the area, including Bird Cay in the Northern Lagoon which
are important breeding grounds for iguanas, crocodiles and
waterbirds, including egrets, rosette spoonbills, boat-billed
herons along with wood and white ibis.

Bird
watching here is excellent and varies dramatically as you
pass through the many different habitats, including Savannah,
Pine Ridge, Broadleaf Forest, marsh, mangrove, jungle, river
and sea. Aquatic flora and fauna are abundant due to a tremendous
amount of nutrient-rich runoff flowing through these passageways
en route from the Maya Mountains to the Caribbean Sea. The
tangled mangrove forest along portions of the lagoon shoreline
is an important nursery for young shrimp crabs, lobster,
fish and other marine life. Wildlife in the area includes
deer, peccary, armadillo, gibnut and various wild cats.

There
are many awe inspiring caves in the surrounding hills to
investigate and explore, including Ben Lamond Cave, a popular
site for visiting spelunkers. Incredible hiking is possible
through the properties many different habitats, including
pine ridge, beachfront, lagoon front, there is also a portion
of the diverse Buttonwood lagoon on the property, which
is home to crocodiles, many birds and fish.
Location
& Getting There:
The
property is located about 20-25 miles south of Belize City
and is accessed by boat, either by starting from the Haulover
Creek, then on to the Burdon Canal, then winding through
mangrove lined canals, across the Sibun River and through
the Northern and Southern Lagoons which are part of an extensive
estuary surrounded by mangroves, then you can enter the
property either from the Lagoon side, or take the Manatee
Bar River out to the ocean and enter the property from the
sea side.
A boat
can also be taken directly from Belize City, along the coast,
straight to the beachfront portion of the property. Another
way to get there is to take the Manatee Cutoff, (also called
the Coastal Highway) to Gales Point, then take a boat across
to the property from there. The property is approximately
3 miles south of the Manatee Bar River which gives access
from the Caribbean Sea to the Southern Lagoon.
The
possibilities for this property are absolutely endless,
with the wildlife rich Southern Lagoon on one side and the
Caribbean Sea with all it's glorious reefs and various islands
